About UNL's Efforts:

UNL maintains hundreds of utility meters, measuring electricity, steam, chilled water, natural gas and domestic water used in campus buildings.

Most of these are read hourly by our Building Automation System and used to track energy consumption trends, verify savings and detect abnormal operation.

Some meters are still read on-location each month; these are being upgraded to automatic data reading as funds and time permit.

Buildings which have their own revenue streams are actually billed for utilities, while others have their utility cost paid from UNL budget allocations, and their utility use is tracked to determine the best use of energy conservation project funds.
