Use of Outdoor Spaces

UNL faculty, staff and student organizations have many opportunities to use and enjoy the beautiful outdoor spaces on both City and East Campus. Both academic and social events are welcome if proper care is taken to protect landscape turf, plantings, and related facilities.

Spaces especially appropriate for outdoor events include:

  • Meier Commons
  • Greenspace north of Food Industry Complex
  • Maxwell Arboretum
  • The Porch
  • Love Library North Plaza
  • Nebraska Union Plaza
  • Lied Plaza
  • Sheldon Museum of Art & Sculpture Garden
  • • University Plaza (north of Woods Art Building)

There are many smaller greenspaces adjacent to campus buildings that can also be used for activities.

Please follow these guidelines:

  1. Student organizations need to obtain approval for outdoor activities through the Office for Student Involvement (402-472-2454). This process requires organizational representatives to be in contact with the Nebraska Unions and reduces the chances for conflict with other users.

  2. Faculty, staff, and other groups should also obtain approval for outdoor activities from the Nebraska Unions. We can help choose the best location to fit the requirements of your event, and will work with your representative to minimize damages to landscape plantings, lawns and soils. Complete on-line Outdoor Event Space Request, or call 402-472-8167.

  3. If it is raining or snowing the day of your event or we have had significant rain or snow before your event, you may need to coordinate with Landscape Services if it is too wet to hold your event on the turf. You should have an alternative location or alternate date in case of rain, or you may have to reschedule or cancel your event.

  4. If any damage beyond normal wear and tear is done to the site, Facilities Business Office will bill organizations for the cost of renovation.

  5. Do not tie, climb, use nails or staples to attach objects to campus trees and shrubs. Do not tie, climb, use nails or stables to attach objects to the Perin Porch, Loerch Gazebo, other wooden structures or buildings.

  6. All organizations are responsible for cleanup and trash disposal related to their event. Those organizations using approved UNL Catering Services are encouraged to require their caterer to remove food waste from the site. (http://procurement.unl.edu/contractsprime/)

Landscape Services will deliver and remove containers to and from the activity site for the following costs:

    1st barrel (0.25 cubic yard) $12.00
    Additional barrels 4.00/each
    2 cubic yard dumpster 35.00/each

Recycle containers are available from UNL Recycling at no cost.

  7. Picnic Tables are available from Landscape Services. Landscape Services will deliver and pickup picnic tables to and from the activity site for the following costs:

First Picnic Table $25.00, each additional table $10.00
Average capacity per table is 8 people

  8. Requests for litter containers and or picnic tables delivered are included in the on-line request. Payment arrangements are to be made prior to the event. UNL faculty, staff and student organizations will need to supply a valid cost center for the usage cost.

Phone 402-472-2608 for service arrangements. Call for service at least three working days before the event. Weekend delivery is not available.

  9. Cars and trucks must stay on paved areas, roads or parking lots. No driving on the grass! Visitor parking on campus is limited. Group parking arrangements can be made by calling Ron Fuller at Parking Services at 402-472-8436. Groups will be charged to park on campus.

  10. On East Campus, tables and chairs on the green space is limited. Be sure to check availability. At the Perin Porch, tables and chairs should be set up only on the south side of the structure, to avoid damaging delicate plantings to the north.

  11. Once the request for outside space is approved, group liability insurance for this event is required if the group is not affiliated with UNL or if a UNL group is bringing in an outside vendor on campus. Arrangements must be made by contacting Gayle Shanou with Risk Management at 402-472-8641 before the event is approved.

Please note: The UNL campus is a public place. There are no guarantees that you will be the only individual/group utilizing the area.

Call Landscape Services at 402-472-2608 if you have any questions. We want you to have a great event and enjoy our beautiful campus!
